Immersive Music & Media Experiments

These experiments explore how spatial sound, interactive technology, and creative design can deepen engagement with music performance and listening. In collaboration with the Aeolus String Quartet, the Lab created immersive recordings that place listeners inside the spatial and expressive environment of the ensemble. Developed in partnership with Steve Wogaman and the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, these projects combine high-resolution audio capture, spatial mixing, and interactive media design to create new ways of experiencing chamber music through headphones, web platforms, and immersive listening environments.

The MusEDLab, together with IRCAM developed an interactive platform exploring Pierre Boulez’s Dialogue de l’ombre double, a landmark work in spatial electroacoustic music. The project integrates archival recordings, score materials, and spatial audio processing into an interactive web environment that allows listeners to explore the piece’s complex spatial design and musical structure. The platform was developed collaboratively with Alex Zhang, James Chang, and Zehao Wang, combining Web Audio technologies, spatial audio visualization, and interactive media design to make historically important electroacoustic works more accessible for students, performers, and audiences.

Most recently, the MusEDLab expanded this work into projects focused on Chinese traditional music and immersive cultural media. In collaboration with Yiting Liu, the Lab designed immersive multichannel recording approaches and AI-enabled interfaces that allow users to explore traditional instrumental performances through spatial listening, analysis, and interactive media tools. These projects reflect MusEDLab’s broader mission to connect music performance, cultural heritage, and emerging technologies in ways that support creative learning, research, and public engagement.
