Experimental Tools

Listen closely.
Make something.
Return with new ears.

Try ideas taking shape in the lab: tuning by ear, mapping what you hear, building musical loops and reflecting on a performance.

These are working experiments and public previews. Choose a practice below, and save or export work you want to keep.

Start with listening

Listening & attention

Notice a change. Test a judgment. Listen again.

Experimental release

Tuning Partner

Develop tuning by ear with a pure-fifth drone, an adjustable synthetic tone and optional beating support.

Tolerance is adjustable below two cents. Record locally, or try live instrument pitch estimates with optional visual feedback, phrase timing and history. Live tracking is experimental; use headphones with the reference.

Listening Architecture

Mark changes in a recording, annotate moments and passages, and revisit saved listenings in a notebook.

Use your own audio or the optional demo. Export your notebook to keep a portable copy.

Spatial Listening Maps

Listen to a song section by section and place the instruments or sounds you hear from left to right and near to far. Add drawings and notes, then compare your maps.

Maps show your listening interpretation. Moving a label does not change the recording. Your audio stays on your device; export maps to keep a portable copy.

Making & exploring

Shape musical material through movement, drawing and play.

Loop Lab

Paint repeating musical layers. Fit, expand, save and reopen a loop as you explore how the parts work together.

Rhythm Experiment

Try locally generated AI rhythm variations and compare what changes.

The first use of AI downloads about 18 MB, according to the workshop release notes.

aQWERTYon · Melody Notebook

Play from your computer keyboard, explore harmony and keep musical phrases in a notebook.

This is the workshop preview; the established aQWERTYon project remains in the main Projects directory.

Groove Pizza · Pizza Notebook

Build rhythms with circular patterns, keep versions in your Pizza Notebook and return to earlier ideas.

Download a notebook backup to keep a portable copy. Shared notebook links allow anyone with the link to view and edit.

Recording & reflection

Keep a trace of a performance, then decide what to notice.

Virtual Piano Duet

Play along with a piano performance and keep phrases in the Melody Notebook.

The established project and its context remain in the main Projects directory.

Scale Rows

Play a scale-based instrument from your keyboard or on-screen keys, then record and revisit short musical takes.

Piece It Together

Listen to an eight-card musical excerpt, rearrange its graphic-score cards, and compare the resulting sequences.

Tablet interaction still needs testing; try this prototype on a laptop.

The practice behind the tools

Rengongfu 人工夫

How can technology support musical judgment developed through practice? Rengongfu connects these experiments with research on AI, learning and human skill.

Explore the approach, or use the English / 中文 workshop hub to move between the current previews.

Before you begin

Start audio softly. Browser, microphone and touch support vary by tool. Check each tool’s own controls and notes; physical tablet and Safari testing is ongoing.

Many previews keep work in the browser where you made it. Use their export or save controls before switching devices or clearing browser data.
